The useful answer: compare both airports for your exact destination

Heraklion Airport usually has the lower ground-transfer fare for central and east Crete. Chania Airport can be lower for selected west or south-west destinations. Rethymno is not an automatic Chania choice: the current published fares are €93 from HER and €115 from CHQ. For Plakias they are €130 from HER and €120 from CHQ. Flight schedule, airfare and where your itinerary ends can outweigh the taxi difference, so this tool separates ground cost from total arrival cost instead of naming one airport universally “best.”

Three ways to make the airport decision

Start with the stay, not the airport name

Compare the exact resort first. A destination near the middle of Crete can challenge the common assumption that CHQ is always the cheaper arrival for Rethymno province.

Price the entire arrival

A flight that is €20 cheaper per person saves €80 for four travellers. Enter both airfares so a small taxi difference does not hide the lower group total.

Consider an open-jaw itinerary

If your holiday moves from west to east, arriving at CHQ and leaving from HER—or the reverse—can reduce backtracking. Compare each airport for the first and final stay separately.
